Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branch in Thiagarajar polytechnic college. This oldest and the largest department aims at imparting high-quality education in Mechanical Engineering through practical and theoretical training. The department is well set to create and maintain an environment which will facilitate the effective teaching-learning process for the faculty and students, thus moulding smart and dynamic mechanical engineering diploma holders, who will shoulder real-life engineering problems by applying practical and theoretical knowledge along with various management tools and professional ethics.Mechanical engineering is used in almost every aspect of everyday life, from cell phones and biomedical devices to flights and power plants. Mechanical engineers deal with economic problems as well as technical issues, ranging from the expense of a single product to the economic impact of a manufacturing plant. Mechanical engineers are also employed in sales and engineering management.The Department has well-equipped laboratories and computing facilities, with the latest technology and syllabus requirements. Well qualified faculty and skilled supporting staff are the other strengths of the department.

Basic and Discipline specific knowledge: Apply knowledge of basic mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals and engineering specialization to solve the engineering problems.
Problem analysis: Identify and analyze well-defined engineering problems using codified standard methods.
Design/ development of solutions: Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the design of systems components or processes to meet specified needs.
Engineering Tools, Experimentation and Testing: Apply modem engineering tools andappropriate technique to conduct standard tests and measurements.

The Mechanical Engineering Department proudly inaugurated its department magazine “Yanthrika”, a platform created to showcase the technical knowledge, creativity, and achievements of our students and faculty members. The magazine highlights various articles, innovations, project ideas, and departmental activities related to the field of Mechanical Engineering

Three-day online Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “Faculty Empowerment in Quality, Industrial Systems and Safety”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, organized a three-day online Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “Faculty Empowerment in Quality, Industrial Systems and Safety” from 28 to 30 July 2025 in association with SITTTR, Kalamassery, under the Department of Technical Education, Government of Kerala.

Strategies for Heavy Hydraulic Equipment

Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a session on "Strategies for Heavy Hydraulic Equipment” on 20 January 2026 at MS6 Classroom. The seminar was handled by Mr. Akhil Krishna N and was attended by diploma Mechanical Engineering students. The session provided valuable insights into logistics planning, maintenance strategies.

Idea Pitching Competition

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Association – Tech Know Centre conducted an Idea Pitching Competition on 15 October 2025 at the Seminar Hall. The competition provided a platform for students to present innovative ideas and showcase their creativity, technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills. The event encouraged innovation and active student participation.

Non-Destructive Testing Techniques

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, in association with the Placement Cell, organized a Workshop on Non-Destructive Testing Techniques on 19 September 2025 at the Seminar Hall. The session was conducted by Mr. Aswin Alex Babu, Operation Manager, IIT NDT Pvt. Ltd.

NPTEL Programme

An NPTEL Programme was held on 7 September 2025 at the Seminar Hall of TPC Alagappanagar. The programme began with a prayer and a welcome address by Shri. Cinto CJ, HOD Mechanical Department. Shri. Lijo John, Principal, delivered the presidential address, followed by the inaugural address by Shri. Sajith C, Lecturer, Mechanical Department, MTI Thrissur.

“Students Engine Assembly Workshop”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, organized a practical workshop titled “Students Engine Assembly Workshop” on 5th February 2025. The workshop was specifically designed for Semester 6 students, offering them a valuable hands-on experience in internal combustion (IC) engine components and assembly procedures.

“Ideation” Workshop

Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, successfully conducted a creativity-focused session titled “Ideation” on Monday, 3rd March 2025. The event was specially arranged for Semester 4 students, aiming to stimulate their innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. The session was led by Mr. Akhil Madav, a distinguished resource person known for his work in idea generation, innovation facilitation, and design thinking practices.

“Integration of CAD/CAM with CNC Machines”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, organized a technical session on “Integration of CAD/CAM with CNC Machines” on Wednesday, 12th February 2025. The event was specially arranged for the benefit of Semester 6 Mechanical Engineering students, aiming to enhance their understanding of modern manufacturing technologies. The session was led by Mr. Karthik G, a Professional CADD Expert from RAGA Tech Source Pvt. Ltd., who brought deep industry knowledge and real-time applications into the classroom.

“Explore the Future of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, organized a forward-looking expert session titled “Explore the Future of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing” on Thursday, 6th February 2025. The event featured distinguished professional from CAD CENTRE, Irinjalakuda – Mr. Vineeth Narayanan.

“Scope and Challenges in Vehicle Service System”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College organized an insightful technical session on “Scope and Challenges in Vehicle Service System” on Friday, 31st January 2025, at the college seminar hall.The resource person for the session was Mr. Gopakumar M, Academic Coordinator at Mahindra TCR Division, who brought with him a wealth of industry experience and academic insight.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar, hosted an inspiring leadership development session on Thursday, 19th December 2024. The session was titled “Mobilizing Others to Achieve Purpose Under Conditions of Uncertainty – What Leaders Do – Challenges the Hands, the Head, and the Heart.” The keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Dunant Ponnary, Executive Vice President of Onshore Group of Companies.

Hands-on Lathe CNC Workshop

The Thiagarajar Polytechnic College Mechanical Department organized a hands-on Lathe CNC Workshop on 19 January 2024 in the mechanical workshop for fourth-semester students. The program focused on practical training in conventional lathe operations, CNC program writing, and machining procedures.

Self-Awareness and Personality Development

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College organized a session on Self-Awareness and Personality Development on 13 November 2023 for first-semester students. The program aimed to strengthen confidence, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills.

General Aptitude Training introduction session

Applied Physics and Chemistry Lab

The Applied Physics and Chemistry Lab provides students with practical knowledge of fundamental principles in physics and chemistry. Through experiments on materials, properties, reactions, and measurements, the lab helps students understand the scientific concepts that form the foundation of mechanical engineering applications.

Fluid Mechanics Lab

The Fluid Mechanics Lab enables students to study the properties and behavior of fluids through experiments on flow measurement, pressure, and hydraulics. It helps in understanding fundamental principles applied in pumps, turbines, and fluid systems, thereby strengthening the practical knowledge required in mechanical engineering applications.

Automotive Lab

The Automotive Lab provides practical exposure to automobile systems and components such as engines, transmission, braking, and suspension. It helps students understand vehicle design, operation, maintenance, and testing. The lab enhances technical skills in troubleshooting and equips mechanical engineering students with knowledge relevant to the automotive industry.

Communication Skills in English Lab

The Communication Skills in English Lab helps students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities through practical training. Equipped with audio-visual systems and interactive software, the lab provides activities in pronunciation.

Central Computer Laboratory

The Central Computer Laboratory provides students with advanced computing facilities to enhance their technical knowledge and practical skills. It is equipped with modern computer systems, high-speed internet. The lab supports learning in areas such as CAD/CAM enabling mechanical engineering students to integrate computer technology with core mechanical concepts.

MECHANICAL WORKSHOP

The Mechanical Workshop is one of the most important facilities in a Polytechnic College, especially for Mechanical Engineering students. It provides students with the essential hands-on training and practical knowledge required to understand various manufacturing processes

Heat Engine Lab

Heat Engine Lab & Air Compressor – Mechanical Department. The Heat Engine Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department is designed to provide students with practical exposure to the working of various internal combustion engines and air compressors

Heat Engine Lab

Heat Engine Lab – Ruston Diesel Engine. It is widely used for conducting experiments related to brake power, indicated power, mechanical efficiency, thermal efficiency, and specific fuel consumption.

Interactive panel

An Interactive Panel is a large touchscreen display designed for teaching, presentations, and collaborative learning. It replaces the conventional blackboard/whiteboard with a digital interface.

Mechanical Tech know Centre is an essential extension of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar. Established with the objective of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, the centre provides students with exposure to advanced technological tools, machinery, and real-world industry practices. In addition to enriching the educational experience of students, the center also focuses on improving the professional skills of the staff, ensuring continuous growth for both students and faculty members. The Centre is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in various aspects of mechanical engineering. By offering access to modern machinery, tools, and technology, the Center ensures that students are well-versed in practical applications of theoretical concepts. Through regular workshops, training sessions, and exposure to the latest technological advancements, faculty members are continually updated on industry trends and best practices. This ensures that the quality of teaching remains high, and the faculty is equipped to guide students through their academic and practical learning. The center regularly organizes workshops and training sessions on emerging technologies and methodologies in mechanical engineering.

NPTEL Cell

The NPTEL Cell of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Thiagarajar Polytechnic College serves as a dedicated platform to promote high-quality online technical learning among students. The cell regularly conducts orientation sessions, guided classes, and mentoring support to help mechanical students successfully enroll in and complete NPTEL courses. Through structured coaching and continuous encouragement, the cell consistently enables around 40 students each year to pass NPTEL certification programs, strengthening their academic knowledge, industry readiness, and confidence in advanced engineering concepts.
