Since its establishment in 1956, the institution has been committed to nurturing talented technicians, many of whom have advanced to become exceptional engineers. The college has consistently upheld its traditions and academic excellence.

With its modern infrastructure, well-qualified faculty, and a serene campus, the college has excelled in academics, extracurriculars, sports, and community activities. The institution adapts to the dynamic educational landscape, including the implementation of the Revision 2021 syllabus, to foster skills and knowledge among students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical and electronics engineering.

Thiagarajar Polytechnic College is the first aided polytechnic of the country, which was specially sanctioned by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. It was started by Late. Dr. AlagappaChettiar, a great Educationalist and philanthropist, during 1956, with 30 students in Civil Engineering branch. In the very next year students were admitted in Mechanical and Electrical branches also.Dr. AlagappaChettiar passed away in 1957. After the death of Dr.AlagappaChettiar,the institution was taken over by K.ThiagarajanChettiar, Madurai during the year 1961. Mr. E.K.Menon was the Principal. During 1980-81, the management was transferred to Trichur Diocesan Community Development Society, Thrissur, under the Patron-ship of the Arch Bishop of Thrissur. Rev. Fr. Joseph Kakkassery became the Chairman of the Governing Council and Shri. Francis C. Joseph as Principal of the institution.The institution is functioning with the approval of State Board of Technical Education, Kerala and All India Council for Technical Education, Delhi. The present intake of students in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches is 60 each and staff strength comes to 82. N.C.C., N.S.S., Continuing Education Cell etc. are functioning well. The P.T.A, Alumni, etc. provide immense support to the student development activities. The Institution maintains good result statistics in the state. Our alumni serve as engineering professionals in internationally accredited institutions in various parts of the world. They can be spotted very clearly by their dedication to work, individual thinking, honesty and kind attitude towards others.

Dr.Alagappa Chettiyar was a well-known business man and a social worker.He came to Kerala for running his new company named Alagappa Textiles.He started the institution for the higher studies of his employees’ children in 1956.The great legend passed away in 1957. The College was inaugurated by Mr. P.S Rao ICS, then Acting Governor of Kerala.The college commenced its functioning in the textile mill building with 30 students in Civil Engineering. In 1957 the institution came under the Board of Technical Education Kerala State and allotted two more new branches, Electrical and Mechanical.In the same year, the foundation for the new building was laid.After the demise of beloved Dr.AlagappaChettiyar in 1957 the institution came under the AlagappaChettiyar Education trust.In 1961 AlagappaChettiyar Education trust handed over the institution to Madurai Thiagarajar Educational Trust. In 1961 the institution was named as Thiagarajar Polytechnic. In 1980 Trichur Diocesan Development Society taken over the charge of the institution with Mr.ManikkaVasagam as the chairman.The institution was under this management from 1980 to 1992.After the direct payment agreement between Kerala State Government and the Management in 1992 the institution came under Trichur Diocesan Community Development Society.

Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, is located at Alagappanagar in Thrissur District, hardly 500 Mts. east of Amballur Junction, which is 12 Km. south from Thrissur in the (Thrissur-Ernakulam)NH-544. The nearest railway station is Pudukkad,which is only 2 Km. from the institution.
